Tributes are being paid to a former Hounslow councillor who represented the Osterley and Spring Grove ward for over a decade.

Councillor Sheila O'Reilly, who was a member of the Conservative group on the council, died recently from pancreatic cancer.

She was first elected in a by-election in 2005 and held her seat until the local elections of May 2018.

She was particularly concerned with planning matters and acted as Chair of the Sustainable Development Committee from 2006 to 2010. She remained on the committee when it became the Planning Committee until she left the Council.

She was also a member of the Isleworth and Brentford Area Committee, the Governor Appointments Panel, the Disability Community Forum, and the Members' Constitution Working Party.

Additionally, Mrs O'Reilly was appointed as the Council's representative on the West Thames College Governing Body.

Cllr Tony Louki said in his ward update, “Regardless of our party-political incongruities, we would work well together to advocate for the Ward and its residents during our coincidental tenure as Councillors.”

The local residents' association said, "OWGRA (Osterley & Wyke Green Residents' Association) is very saddened at the passing of Sheila O’Reilly, former Ward Councillor for Osterley & Spring Grove Ward, and Secretary and member of OWGRA for many years. We are receiving many tributes about her. Sheila’s knowledge and experience of planning was invaluable. We frequently consulted her on planning applications in our area eg the Campion House development on Thornbury Road, Nishkam (including the Judicial Review) and the Tesco/Homebase site redevelopment (including the public inquiry). She was always approachable, willing to help, generous with her time and professional. She will be sorely missed by the local community that she did so much for."

Councillor Shantanu Rajawat, Leader of Hounslow Council, added, “I was saddened to hear about the passing of former Councillor O'Reilly and my thoughts are with her family and friends at this time.

“Her dedication to public service and her work in, and influence on, the community she served, as well as the borough more widely, will never be forgotten. Her memory will inspire those who had the privilege to know her, and her contribution will be remembered in the borough for years to come.”

The Council will pay tribute to Mrs O'Reilly at its next full Council meeting and a black ribbon has been placed around the Hounslow Council flag in main reception at Hounslow House.

Mrs O’Reilly is survived by her husband Peter, her son Kevin and daughter Kathleen.
