Independent candidate and fierce critic of the Labour administration in Hounslow, Theo Dennison, has been elected as the councillor for the Syon and Brentford lock ward.

He took the seat by just twelve votes with Labour’s Max Mosley holding onto the party’s other seat in Brentford East following the by-election held on Thursday 6 March.

Cllr Dennison received 615 votes compared to 603 for Labour’s Jennifer Prain. Having been a long-standing member of the Labour party in Hounslow and a councillor serving in cabinet, he split from the party in 2022 after expressing concerns about the leadership style of Steve Curran. He stood in the Syon and Brentford Lock ward as an independent in the election of that year and came fourth in a three-seat ward and then contested the Brentford West seat unsuccessfully in a by-election in 2024. He got another chance in Syon and Brentford Lock when Labour’s Balraj Sarai had to step down for failing to turn up at council meetings.

Freya Summersgill took third place in the ward gaining 218 votes with Michael Denniss narrowly edging out Reform UK’s Chinmay Parulekar for fourth.

Labour’s victory in Brentford East was achieved with an exceptionally low turnout with just 894 votes cast. Max Mosley gained nearly half of those votes with 430 and David Kerr of Reform UK took second with no other candidate getting over 100.

Cllr Dennison told the Local Democracy Reporting Service, “I broke with them for the same issues I was fighting this by-election on. They were raising the council tax, cutting the council tax reduction scheme and raising their own allowances. That’s what came up on doorsteps.

“People see this sort of thing from people in positions of responsibility and it distresses them… the council no longer has an interest in satisfying people because it didn’t think it needed to. I think the message is that you need to listen to the voters. It cannot be that the council is allowed to continue raising the council tax and cutting the scheme for some of the poorest households, with no regard for the impact of these things.”

Cllr Dennison has previously worked as a parliamentary staffer for George Galloway. Mr Galloway congratulated the newly elected councillor for Syon & Brentford Lock in a social media post.

He said, “Congratulations to the new Councillor for Hounslow, my former parliamentary staffer Theo Dennison! Congratulations my good friend.”
