It might not quite feel like summer yet due to the unseasonable weather, but Hounslow Symphony Orchestra (HSO) is hoping to take you to warmer and sunnier climes in its next concert.

Its concert on Saturday 22 June begins with Delius’s two-tone poems, On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring and Summer Evening. A song from a solo cello aims to recreate the ambience of a gently flowing river on a warm summer night, with the rocking of small boats and chirruping insects. Different instruments imitate the sounds of the cuckoo including the oboe, strings, and clarinet.

Dvorak’s ‘New World Symphony’ and ‘Slavonic Dances’, inspired by folk music from Bohemia, will be familiar to many. The sunny eighth symphony (originally the fourth symphony) was written by Dvořák in 1889 and features sounds of summer including, of course, the odd rumble of thunder.

The orchestra is joined by up-and-coming soloist Daryl Giuliano, who has studied all over the world and will be performing Elgar’s Cello Concerto. Although the concerto was written in post-war 1919, it wasn’t particularly well received or widely performed until Jaqueline du Pré’s recording in 1965 caught the public’s imagination. Since then, the piece has been used in numerous soundtracks, most recently in Tár.

Programme:

Delius: 2 Pieces for Small Orchestra
Elgar: Cello Concerto
Soloist: Daryl Giuliano
Dvorak: Symphony No. 8

The concert is being held at St Mary's Church, Osterley Road, Isleworth (TW7 4PW) and begins at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £14.30 or £11 for concessions and £4 children in advance or £16/£12 on the door with contactless or card payment preferred.

The event has been supported by The Delius Society.

HSO says it aims to be the friendliest orchestra in London. It is an amateur orchestra of around 55 players which plays three concerts each season, usually at St Mary’s Church and St Paul’s Church, 56 Grove Park Road, Chiswick, W4 3SB.

It concentrates on the standard classical and romantic repertoire and from time to time perform contemporary works.
