A group of young rowers from Brentford got an exclusive invite this week to the announcement of the Team GB rowing squad for the Paris Olympics.

The event was held at Kew Gardens and many of the national team took time out of their interviews and photocalls on the big day of their national announcement as an Olympic squad to chat to the young athletes about their careers, training schedules, diets and personal challenges on the road to the games.

They included Heidi Long, Helen Glover, Imogen Grant, Ollie Wynne Griffith and Tom George among many others.

Afterwards, the young people said how they found it reassuring how friendly and accessible the elite rowers had been in chatting with them.

Young Rower Alexander Shephard said, “It was very inspirational to be able to speak to so many of the athletes that I look up to and aspire to be like as I progress on the journey towards becoming an international athlete. Everyone was so kind and welcoming, and gave all of us lots of helpful advice on how to achieve our goals. It was an honour to be able to speak to all of them”.
