Speculation as to the likely new occupant of the former Morrisons store on High Street Brentford can end after Lidl confirmed it is taking over the space.

It has completed the signing of the lease with housing association L&Q to open a new store subject to planning permission.

The discount supermarket giant says that it will be making a multi-million pound investment in the site and creating 40 new jobs is the area.

The 1,430m2 store, which has been vacant since last September, will include a bakery, baby changing facilities and customers will have access to ample car and bike parking space.

Grant Shulton, Regional Head of Property at Lidl GB, commented, “We know how much those living in the area value having a supermarket on this site, so we’re delighted to confirm our plans for a Lidl in Brentford. If planning permission is granted it would mark a multi-million-pound investment, whilst providing the community with easy access to our high quality, affordable products.”

Angie Hooper, New Business Director at L&Q, said, “We are very pleased to welcome Lidl on site at our Brentford High Street development scheme. At L&Q we are not just in the business of building homes, but also ensuring our communities are thriving, so we are very excited about the local opportunities for investment and employment, as well as filing the gap previously left by Morrisons.”

Lidl has been expanding rapidly in the UK and was recently named the fastest growing bricks and mortar supermarket for past nine months in a row resulting in its market share reaching a new high of 8.1%. It is now the third largest supermarket chain having overtaken Asda last year.
