A year to the day after the closure of the Watermans Arts Centreon 11 April 2024, Brentford Arts Works has announced that it is planning a series of outdoor events over the summer.

The community group which was set up to keep arts and culture alive in TW8 in the absence of a bricks and mortar facility says it has been working quietly behind the scenes.

With no sign of ‘spades in the ground’ at the Brentford Police Station site earmarked for the new centre, the group says that the desire for the provision of arts and culture remains an important need and continues to be its focus

It has had meetings with Cllrs. Tom Bruce and Salman Shaheen who continue to engage with the group.

Brentford Art Works says it is seriously looking at various option for the event and, although no specific details are available as yet, you are advised to ‘watch this space’.

If you are local to Brentford and have expertise in the arts and culture sector you get in touch with Brentford Arts Works by emailing rubya.wcw@gmail.com.

It strongly believes that there is a need for a centre that can offer arts and leisure facilities in Brentford as well as a space for community groups of all kinds, a meeting place and a place to eat and enjoy a drink or a coffee.

Brentford Arts Works aims to represent the community, arts and business sectors and to advocate for preservation of Brentford’s rich heritage. It is frustrated with the lack of clarity over the future of the building at 40 High Street Brentford, despite the council’s assurances that there would always be arts provision and a community hub on the site, irrespective of whether or not and when the arts centre might be relocated.

The group emerged from the campaign to save the Watermans Art Centre which closed with little warning this April. The Save Our Watermans campaign evolved into a broader working group looking at the issue of arts in TW8.
