Cancer support facility in the West Mid Hospital marks 21 years
The Mulberry Cancer Centre is celebrating 21 years of providing cancer support to patients and their loved ones. Since first opening its doors in 2001, the centre in the grounds of the West Middlesex University Hospital, has grown and adapted its services. The Macmillan Cancer Support and Information team at The Mulberry Centre provide a comprehensive support service which includes counselling sessions, workshops, and physical support with the side effects of cancer treatment through relaxation therapies. The centre aims to help everyone who is affected by cancer, including carers, family members and bereaved relatives. Julie Quinn is the Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Services Manager at the Mulberry Centre. She says, ““We see many different people throughout the day at The Mulberry Centre. All will be greeted with a smile and a cuppa in an oasis of calm. We give patients the support they need to help them live with cancer. “I arrive here at the Centre around 8.30am. After a coffee and email check, we open the centre at 10am. Cancer patients can access counselling, complementary therapies, or wellbeing classes. The activities on offer include: Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi, coffee mornings, and art classes. We have the most amazing volunteers here at the centre, some of whom run a strength and balance exercise session for our patients. The volunteers are managed by Debbie Davey, our Volunteer Lead.”
The combination of information, self-management, and relaxation helps patients feel in control; and helps them manage both the physical and mental trauma of a cancer diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. Christine Young, Macmillan Partnership Quality Lead said, “It’s wonderful to see The Mulberry Centre celebrating 21 years providing emotional and physical support to people living with cancer in Hounslow and the surrounding areas.” “The Mulberry Centre aims to improve the lives of anyone affected by cancer, including those with a diagnosis, carers, family members and bereaved relatives, by enhancing emotional and physical well-being.” “We know that people are living longer following a cancer diagnosis, and as their needs change over time, Macmillan Cancer Information Services are there to provide ongoing support and make sure that people living with cancer can live life to the fullest.” For more information on the Macmillan services available in north west London, click here.
