Celebrating female achievements in science, technology, engineering, and maths
February 29, 2024 Just for one day Brentford will be the home of the London Museum of Women in STEM. Saturday 9 March is International Women’s Day and between 10am and 4pm there will be a takeover at the London Museum of Water & Steam The whole venue will be celebrating and showcasing the work that women do within science, technology, engineering, arts and maths. In the UK, just over a quarter of people working in the STEM sectors are female. Even in 2024, people generally tend to see STEM subjects as being only for boys and men. To counter this perception the museum has created a day that aims to empower girls and women in STEM subjects at all levels. There will be special guests from Worley, Google and Kew Gardens and there'll be lots to do all day for all the family including experiments, workshops, talks, and crafts. Girls can learn how to code with female software engineers from Google and Selfridges, or take part in our engineering challenge with Jinx St Leger. You can also get your hands on creating herbarium specimens with scientists from the museum’s neighbours at Kew Gardens or create unique cyanotypes of steam engine components with Artist in Residence Jasmine Pradissitto. Museum Director, Hannah Harte, said, “All over the Sciences, Technology, Engineering, and Maths women are totally knocking it out of the park – they’re doing amazing things! And yet the persistent thinking is that these subjects are for guys. The London Museum of Water & Steam is a place founded in engineering, science and technology, and now with a large number of women working on our teams. This wasn’t always the case though, so our history compels us to show everyone that STEM subjects are just as exciting for girls too!” Activities and workshops are suitable for all ages and genders, but might be of particular interest to girls aged 6-18. All workshops and activities are free to attend. Normal museum admission applies. A crowdfunding appeal has been launched by the London Museum of Water and Steam due to it currently going through what it describes as a difficult time financially.
