Fire takes hold of building on Ealing Road

Thirty people were forced to evacuate from Sperry House on Ealing Road this morning after a fire broke out in a maisonette.

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters were called to a fire at the block of maisonettes near the Great West Quarter in Brentford this Wednesday (26 August).

Half of a split-level maisonette on the ground and first floor of a seven-storey block was damaged by the fire. The fire spread to the external facia of the building and part of a second floor maisonette and its balcony were also damaged.

The occupants left the building before the Brigade arrived. One man was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

Station Commander Jon Holt, who was at the scene, said: "Crews were faced with a fully developed fire upon arrival and worked hard to bring the blaze under control.

"Firefighters will remain on scene throughout the afternoon damping down and assisting our Fire Investigation Team as they work to try and establish the cause of the fire."

The Brigade's 999 Control Officers took 31 calls to the blaze with the first notification at 10.42am. The fire was under control in just over an hour.

Fire crews from Chiswick, Ealing, Heston, Acton, Richmond and surrounding fire stations were at the scene.

Ealing Road was closed due to the fire and local buses were diverted.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
