Council urges residents not to fall victim to 'heartless money-making schemes'
Local people are being urged to fight back against scammers by the London Borough of Hounslow. The council are taking part in the Office of Fair Trading's "Scamnesty" campaign and are encouraging anyone who have received details of anything that could be a scam to drop off the details at special boxes around the borough. Cllr Barbara Reid said, "Scammers are sophisticated at targeting people who are often the most vulnerable in society. "Given today's tougher economic times it is more important than ever for people to be alert to prevent themselves, or others from falling victim to these heartless money-making schemes. "Only a small percentage of victims report these scams. With the whole community keeping a look out, we will be better equipped to beat the bogus sellers that give honest businesses a bad name, and cost the UK billions of pounds each year. "Scammers cause deep anguish to their victims. Though anyone can be targeted by these criminals, those most at risk are often the elderly and vulnerable.” The main kinds of scam include:
The Scamnesty boxes have been set up at various locations across the borough, such as libraries and council offices.
