Marilyn Bater, retired teacher and trade union activist died last week in Brentford, her home for many decades.
Karen Russell, Hounslow National Education Union (NEU) President sent out a message to fellow teachers
"It is with great sadness that I inform you all of the unexpected passing last week of Marilyn Bater. Marilyn was an amazing person, who loved her family, her union, her friends and her country with a fierce passion".

She worked as a teacher first in Surrey, then in Hounslow, becoming involved with the National Union of Teachers (NUT, now the NEU) as Treasurer, and then Secretary where she supported and fought for individual teachers and campaigned on their behalf, beoming a National Executive Member for Outer London where she advocated for the teaching profession nationally until her retirement at the end of 2018.
Karen continued "Although recently retired, Marilyn still played an active part and relished her new role as “happily retired teacher.”
"It is a tragedy that she has been taken away from us so soon. She will leave a massive hole in our lives and in our hearts.
"As you can imagine, her family, as all of us are, are struggling to come to terms with her loss. Please respect their privacy at this time. Funeral arrangements are going to be difficult at the moment, but once this national crisis has settled, I’m sure arrangements will be made to celebrate/commemorate Marilyn’s life in an appropriate way".
The cause of her death is not yet known.
