Planners recommend consent for access to London Road
An application to build an access road between Syon Park and London Road looks set to get approval. Originally Hounslow Council planning officers had intended to reject the proposal but the applicant provided further information and now they are recommending that the planning committee give consent. In their original submission, Northumberland Estates said that this link is necessary to make Syon Park an attractive and sustainable location for new businesses to occupy the former Wyevale Centre. They added that the closure of Church Street has resulted in significant increases in journey times, mostly via Park Road/Twickenham Road and Busch Corner Junctions. They claim egress directly onto London Road would alleviate this issue. The new road would result in the loss of 440 square metres of grassland and a single immature tree. There were eight submissions in favour of the plan including on the basis that it would reduce congestion and pollution and encourage visits to the park by making a garden centre viable. It was also noted that the new exit would reduce traffic on Park Road Seven objections to the plan were received including on the ground of impact on the cycle route on London Road and the general increase in traffic and pollution as well as the intrusion into a rural setting and the loss of grassland which is a Grade 1 listed landscape. The planners decided to recommend approval because they believed that the’less than substantial harm’ to the listed park was outweighed by public benefit and there was no harm to highway and pedestrian safety subject to safeguarding conditions.
