Plan to Convert Hamilton Road Hairdresser into Flat

An application (P/2023/2456) has been submitted to Hounslow Council to convert a hairdresser’s premise in Brentford into a flat.
The unisex salon Hair At DJ’s has been closed for some time but the location at the corner of Hamilton Road and Brook Lane North has been the site of a hairdresser for over 50 years with the latest owner running it for over a decade.
The applicant initially approached the council’s planning department with a proposal to extend the property as well as convert it but, on advice from planners, the final proposal was for a one bedroom ground floor flat on the same footprint as the salon. The first floor of the Victorian house is already in residential use.
On the issue of the loss of a local business, council planners told the applicant, “We aim to protect isolated local shops, particularly where they are located in areas more than 400m/5 minutes walking distance of a town or neighbourhood centre, or alternative local shopping provision. The application site is within 400m/5 minutes walking from an alternative shopping provision and therefore the change of use to fully residential would be acceptable.”
The flat will have a bedroom, a living/dining/kitchen area with space for home working, and a bathroom and store as well as a courtyard amenity space and a garage that could be used for a home gym.
