Windmill Road Development Gets the Green Light
Objections from local nursery fail to sway councillors

Councillors on the borough planning committee voted to give the go ahead to a major new housing development on Windmill Road this Thursday evening (7 March).
They had been presented with a planning officers’ report recommending that they approve the application (P/2021/0584) to demolish Churchill House, the single storey commercial building at number 114 and build 74 flats in two blocks ranging from four to eight storeys over two phases.
The site is located near St. Faith’s Church to the south-west of Windmill Road, north of the M4 and A4 Great West Road. It is accessed via a small service road off Windmill Road and is rectangular in shape, located behind a group of semi-detached houses fronting Windmill Road.

There were a significant number of objections to the scheme including from the operators of a nearby nursery who believed the children would be negatively affected by dust from the construction and endangered by the extra movement of heavy vehicles.
Loss of parking in the area was also a concern for some of those opposed to the scheme as there was already felt to be pressure on available spaces. This was one of the grounds for objection by Brentford Voice.
In addition to objections about the height of the development, disappointment was expressed at the low level of affordable housing in the scheme which was well below the borough’s guideline of 50% The developer argued the scheme would not be viable with the required level of affordable unit. 15 of the flats will be classed as affordable of which 10 would be provided at a social rent.
Three members of the committee didn’t support the plans but they were outvoted.
