Support our local artists' exhibition and shopping opportunity
Just a month before Christmas, the artists in residence at Johnson’s Island in Brentfordf will throw open their doors for their annual Winter Open Studios and Exhibition.
Friday 24th November 6-9pm
Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th, 11am-6pm
The island is home to an eclectic mix of artists and craftspeople - painters, sculptors, milliners, jewellers, ceramicists and more – including lots of new residents to the island - making it the perfect venue for visitors to pick up gifts and cards for the season ahead.
All guests are offered a drink and a mince pie as they browse the artworks, which vary from greetings cards and prints, through to one-off sculptures, 3-D paintings, mosaics, hats, oil paintings and more. The studios remain open all weekend, offering a fascinating insight into the lives and work of the artists, their methods and inspiration.
“People are always surprised to find this treasure trove of talent hidden away only a few steps from Brentford High Street,” says Tara Winona whose sought-after wildlife paintings sell all over the world. “We love welcoming visitors to our studios and have a good variety of work for sale, or commission, so our visitors can always find something special to take home with them.”
Accessible from a metal footbridge at the bottom of Catherine Wheel Road near the Brewery Tap pub in Brentford, Johnson’s Island has a unique setting on the Grand Union Canal, between Kew Gardens and Syon Park in West London.
Visitors to the old lock-keeper’s island, cannot fail to be charmed by this magical enclave, and the haphazard cluster of wooden buildings which make up the artist’s colony – surrounded by houseboats, wildlife and the lapping waters of the canal.
