Work expected to come to a complete stop by this weekend after site made safe
Construction of the cycle highway project known Cycleway 9 is being suspended due to the current situation with COVID-19. Hounslow Council said that currently works are being completed to ensure the safety of the site, which would be cleared by Saturday. The Council posted: "Transport for London (TfL) has decided to cease construction of Cycleway 9, currently underway, A number of works will need to be completed to ensure the site is left in a safe condition, but the site is expected to be cleared by Saturday 28 March." All was quiet at Kew Bridge and traffic, which is considerably lighter at the moment, flowing freely. We have asked Transport for London (TfL) for comment and will report back. It had seemed likely that the work on the cycleway project would be suspended as Transport for London (TfL) announced with Crossrail that work on construction projects throughout London would be stopped, for safety reasons. The first part of the cycleway project started before Christmas and as well as the cycle path, included improved pedestrian facilities, including a new pedestrian crossing by Kew Bridge Station. The second phase which started a few weeks ago, was to extend along past the Brentford Leisure Centre along Chiswick High Road. Mike Brown MVO, London’s Transport Commissioner said yesterday (March 25th) ; "The Government and the Mayor have given clear instructions to stay safe and to stop travelling in all cases other than critical workers making absolutely essential journeys. "In line with this, TfL and Crossrail will be bringing all project sites to a temporary Safe Stop unless they need to continue for operational safety reasons. This means that work on all such projects will be temporarily suspended as soon as it is safe to do so. Essential maintenance of the transport network will of course continue. “This is being done to ensure the safety of our construction and project teams and also to further reduce the number of people travelling on the public transport network. It is vital that the transport network is only used by critical workers. As we work through these issues with our supply chain, consideration will be given to the impact on workers, particularly those who are on low incomes."
