A video has been published showing the aftermath of an incident on Brentford High Street in which a 16-year-old girl was hit by the wing mirror of a bus.

The collision took place just after 5pm on Friday 17 November across from the Premier Inn. The footage shows the girl crying out in pain as concerned passersby crowd round to check on her wellbeing.

A London’s Air Ambulance helicopter was called and the girl was taken to a major trauma centre for injuries that were later assessed to be not life-threatening or life-changing.

The driver of the 237 bus travelling to Hammersmith stopped at the scene.

TfL has denied suggestions that appeared in coverage of the incident in the Daily Mail that the cycleway project currently taking place on this stretch of the High Street was a contributory factor. The collision took place near a spot where the road was narrowed by works taking place to install a segregated cycle route. A nearby pedestrian crossing has been taken out of use for the duration of the works. The newspaper quotes one person as saying that the project was ‘making it much more unsafe, causing many more accidents, collisions and making traffic unbearable. It appears that TFL have gone completely crazy.'

Helen Cansick, TfL's Head of Healthy Streets Investment, said, “Safety is our number one priority and our thoughts are with the woman involved in this collision. Our work with Hounslow and Hammersmith and Fulham Councils along the Cycleway 9 route is enabling thousands of people to walk and cycle safely and providing sustainable and affordable travel options.

“We monitor all new cycle routes closely and there is no indication from those who witnessed the incident that the works or new cycleway played any part. We will continue to work with boroughs along the route to ensure that the new route is safe for everyone travelling in the area, and will respond to any requests for information concerning this incident.”
