There is still no confirmation of who the new tenant will be for the former Morrisons store on Brentford High Street but an announcement is expected later this month.

According to local ward councillor Guy Lambert, L&Q is awaiting the retailer’s board to give approval for the lease and it will be a ‘welcome addition’.

The location has been vacant since the supermarket left last September for new premises further up the High Street.

There has been local speculation as to who the retailer might be but none of the favourites such as Asda, Aldi and Lidl are recruiting staff in the area which suggests, if any of these chains are moving in, it may be some time before they open.

How long the new store will be in place for remains unclear as the building is due to be redeveloped. It has been suggested that if a long lease is given to a major retailer, the planned block of flats at the site may have been mothballed.

L&Q bought the site for a reported £28 million and have permission to build 215 housing units.

Its spokesperson has suggested that the tenancy will be a short one and that the intention is to press on with the development saying, " We hope this news to be welcome by the local community and neighbouring residents, as it is a testament to the commitment of L&Q to the development of this site and also to ensuring that the site does not stay empty while development works are happening."

The L&Q plan for the former site would add space for shops café and bars as well as retain the 3,502 sq m of the existing supermarket with 90 car parking spaces. The plan would see two blocks split by a vista towards St. Paul’s Church with the retail space divided between the two.
