Local GP says spike probably unrelated to crowd at play-off semi-final
The latest official data on Covid-19 infections shows that there has been a spike in cases in the Brentford East area. In the seven days to 29 May there were 14 cases in the area bringing the infection rate to 112 per 100,000 population, one of the highest in the borough. Other than Brentford West & Osterley Park, the rest of the TW8 and TW7 post code areas have had no cases reported in the most recent week. Recent analysis has indicated that around half the new infections identified in the London Borough of Hounslow are of the Indian variant which is believed to be more transmissable. Responding to the suggestion that the localised outbreak might have been related to the Championship Play-off semi-final played at the Brentford Community Stadium on 22 May to which two thousands fans were admitted, a local GP said, “I think this is likely to be coincidental, a large proportion of the club’s fan base doesn’t live in the vicinity of the ground. "The growing consensus is that risk is more limited in the open air so the chances of being infected at the game was low. However, analysis of the Cheltenham Festival held at the very beginning of the pandemic shows that going to the pub in the evening was the cause of the spread.” Vaccinations are available at the Brentford Fountain Leisure Centre and reports suggest that people below the current age of eligibility can get the vaccine. Booking is advised. An event, partly organised by Hounslow Council saw around 11,000 people vaccinated at Twickenham Stadium this May Bank Holiday. Hounslow is currently London’s second worst affected borough with a case rate of 58 per 100,000 population. Only Kingston upon Thames is currently faring worse. Up to and including 23 May 4,130,394 people in London had received the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 2,307,529 had received two doses. The total number of Covid-19 cases identified in London is 729,119 as at 1 June, this compares to 3,921,939 cases for England as a whole In the week to 28 May, 2,589 cases were identified in London, a rate of 29 cases per 100,000 population. This compares with 1,936 cases and a rate of 22 for the previous week. For the same period, 17,366 cases were identified in England as a whole, a rate of 31. This compares with 13,022 cases and a rate of 23 for the previous week.
