As Carolyn Hammond retires after ten splendid years

Carolyn Hammond is retiring as editor of Brentford and Chiswick Local History Journal. This is a beautiful annual publication offering articles of historical research on Brentford and Chiswick.

This year's Journal includes articles on willow growing and basket making in the Brentford area, Pocahontas' stay at Syon and an 18th century love story of a relative of the Clitherow family and a flute player who lived in Brentford.

Carolyn says "I took over editing the Journal  in 2008 from Gillian Clegg, who had produced the previous twelve annual issues from 1996 onwards.  As I worked in the Local Studies Department at Chiswick Library I met many people who were researching aspects of the local history of the area and was able to commission articles from them, as well as from members of the Brentford and Chiswick Local History Society.

"Discussing the articles with the authors and choosing the illustrations was always interesting, then the exciting part was passing the text and the picture scans to the layout editor and seeing them transformed into each new edition.  I was lucky enough to work with two very talented layout editors, firstly Rodney Walshaw and latterly Mike Paterson.

"In all I edited ten annual editions - I am grateful to have had the opportunity for such an interesting experience".

Carolyn and Peter Hammond have together published books such as Chiswick Through Time; Brentford Then and Now; Life in an Eighteenth Century Country House; Brentford (Archive Photographs) etc. Many can be bought through the local library or are available second hand. They can also be read at the Local History room at Chiswick Library.

Journals (present and past) can be bought for £5 from Brentford and Chiswick Local History Society or you can become a member for £9 which entitles you to the annual Journal and the Society's programme of talks, a veritable bargain.
